In honor of recovery month, I express my gratitude for the darkest season of my life personally and professionally.
Why?
It is simple.
I now know my purpose and I know my "why."
On September 11, 2017, I made a life-changing decision. I recognized and surrendered to the crippling truth that alcohol (as a coping mechanism for previously undiagnosed mental health struggles) had destroyed my life and put out the fire of my professional capability.
From that day on, I became living proof that hope and victory personally and professionally are closer than they appear. This is true no matter how far you fall or how high you must climb.
It is one step.
One day.
One authentic understanding is that you WILL rise because you WILL go to any length to achieve what you set out to accomplish in this life.
I now have the blessing of living a life aligned with my professional skills and personal fulfillment. This could only have happened by facing the demonic disease that was killing me.
My LinkedIn tagline states that I am a "Purpose Driven Business Leader." That means that I will go to any length to achieve the goals set before me. I am tenacious and fearless in the face of my professional desires and the promises I make. As a man, as a father, as a partner, as a professional, as a community advocate…I choose to be hope and light and show the possibility to overcome.
I write this to those in places I used to be and tell you destruction is closer than it appears. It is time to course correct. There is an army of us willing to help you navigate that journey. You are not alone.
I write this to those (like me) that have moved through storms and made it to better days. I want to encourage you to press on.
Declare that your changed life will change lives.
